Resp Sys Definitions Flashcards
Tidal volume
Tidal vol. = the volume of air breathed in and out with each breath.
Inspiratory reserve volume
The max vol of air that can be breathed in above and beyond the tidal volume.
Exploratory reserve vol
The max vol of air that can be breathed out, more than in quite breathing.
Residual vol
The volume of air present in the lungs even after forced expiration.
Inspiratory capacity
From end of quite expiration to max inspiration.
TV + Inspiratory reserve vol
Functional residual capacity
The vol of air in the lungs at the end of quite expiration.
Below the TV
Vital capacity
Inspiratory reserve vol + TV + Expiatory reserve vol
The vol of air from max inspiration to max forced expiration.
Total lung capacity
VC + residual volume
The total volume of air that the lungs can house.
Lung volumes vs lung capacities
Lung volumes change depending on the TV.
Lung capacities cannot change and are defined in terms of fixed end points in the breathing cycle.
