Presentations Flashcards
1
Q
Heinz bodies on blood film.
A
- due to denaturation of Hb in RBCs, making them less soluble and causing precipitation.
- oxidative damage and depletion of NADPH
G6PD deficiency
- pentose P pathway uses NAD+ and forms NADPH
- deficiency means less NADPH and decreased ability to maintain reduced groups in Hb
- cross linking of sulfyhydryl groups on globin chains and denaturation
2
Q
Hair-on-end appearance of skull on X-ray.
A
B thalassaemia major
- bone marrow has grown into cortical bone
- asso facial bone deformities
- iron overload, causing bone deformities
3
Q
Dactylytis
A
Swollen extremities due to vaso-occlusion caused by sickled RBCs stuck in circulation.
4
Q
Yellow eyes, skin
A
Jaundice
- accumulation of bilirubin (hyperbilirubinaemia) in blood due impaired conjugation and elimination w bile
- SCD Haemolysis, pre-hepatic, hepatic, post-hepatic occlusion of biliary tree, impacted gallstones, liver disease, acute alcoholic hepatitis
