Heinz bodies on blood film.

A
  • due to denaturation of Hb in RBCs, making them less soluble and causing precipitation.
  • oxidative damage and depletion of NADPH

G6PD deficiency

  • pentose P pathway uses NAD+ and forms NADPH
  • deficiency means less NADPH and decreased ability to maintain reduced groups in Hb
  • cross linking of sulfyhydryl groups on globin chains and denaturation

  • accumulation of bilirubin (hyperbilirubinaemia) in blood due impaired conjugation and elimination w bile
  • SCD Haemolysis, pre-hepatic, hepatic, post-hepatic occlusion of biliary tree, impacted gallstones, liver disease, acute alcoholic hepatitis
