Resp L14 Flashcards
What is the role of the respiratory system?
clean, warm and moist air for gas exchange
What does the resp system need? 4
surface for gas exchange
path for air to reach surface
ability to draw breath in and out
sound production and olfaction (smell)
Whats in the URT?
nose
nasal cavity
paranasal sinuses
pharynx
Whats in the LRT?
Larynx
trachea
bronchus
bronchioles
alveoli
What are the 4 main components?
Resp zone
conducting zone
oral cavity
nasal cavity
function of repiratory zone?
Bronchioles and alveoli sites of gas exchange
Function of conducting zone?
nose to bronchioles, ensures air is warm, clean and moist
Function of nasal cavity?
olfaction
function of oral cavity?
passage for air and food
What cell type is in conducting zone?
resp epithelium
cell type in oral cavity
stratified squamous
cell type Resp zone
simple squamous
cell type nasal cavity
olfactory mucosa
what do goblet cells do?
produce mucus which traps debris and mositns air
What does ciliated cells do?
shifts mucus to pharynx
what is the floor cavity of the nasal cavity formed by?
hard and soft palates
function of conchae
for warming and humidifying air, cleaning
what is nasal mucosa function, vascular plexus
vascular plexus can dilate for heating air
What are the 3 parts of the pharynx?
Nasopharynx, oropharynx, laryngopharynx
Nasopharynx features what goes in and cell type
Only air
Resp epithelium
Oropharynx what goes in and what cells
Air and food
stratified squamous
Laryngopharynx what goes in and cell type
Air and food
stratifies squamous epithelium
