What is justice?
Justice = Fairness; right to equal access to health care
What is distributive justice?
Distributive justice = proper distribution of social benefits and burdens across society; decisions based on guiding principles.
What are the principles of distributive justice?
To each person an equal share.
To each person according to need.
To each person according to effort.
To each person according to contribution.
To each person according to merit.
To each person according to free-market exchanges.
What is social justice?
Social justice = fair distribution of society’s benefits and responsibilities and their consequences; ensures that all members in society can benefit equally from that society.
What is equality?
Decisions at micro/meso levels are often made based on the “utility” principle
What is the nurse’s responsibility regarding justice and resource allocation?
As a nurse it is your obligation to identify justice issues and advocate for just health policies and decision-making procedures consistent with current knowledge and practice. Current knowledge may be insufficient, so it is a moral obligation of nurses to identify researchable questions and, if in a position to do so, conduct research that will inform decisions at the policy level.
