resistant materials Flashcards
what does plastic memory mean?
Plastic memory – when reheated thermoplastics try to return to their previous shape.
what does thermoplastics mean?
Thermoplastics – plastics which soften when heated, harden when cooled and can be heated and softened again many times.
what does thermosetting plastics mean?
Thermosetting plastics – plastics which after being heated and softened during manufacture, cannot be changed or softened by heating again.
what does CAD mean?
CAD – computer aided design
what does CAM mean?
CAM – computer aided manufacture
what does recycling mean?
Recycling – re-processing waste or unwanted materials and turning them back into useable material.
whats a pillar drill?
Pillar drill – a machine used to make different sized holes in a number of materials.
whats a line bending?
Line bending – using a single line of heat to bend plastic.
what are plastics made from?
oil
what are the particles like in plastic?
in very long chains
whats polymerisation.?
the process of producing long plastic atom chains
what are the 2 main groups of plastics?
thermoplastics and thermo setting plastics
what are the properties of thermoplastics?
they are less resistant to heat and fire than thermo setting plastic and don’t undergo a chemical change during being heated so you can reshape them and reheat them after they’ve been formed and they will return to their original form
what are the properties of thermo setting plastics?
they undergo a chemical change when being heated and are more resistant to heat and fire and can’t be moulded . they are stronger, harder and more stiffer
whats plastic memory?
when you can heat plastic and shape it and reheat it and it will return to its original form
