Resistant Materials Flashcards
What are resistant materials?
Materials that resist external forces.
What are alloys?
Examples of alloys.
A mixture of two or more metals to give a new metal with desirable properties.
Stainless steel- carbon, iron
Bronze- copper, Tin
What are the two wood families?
Hard woods and softwoods
What are the properties of hardwoods?
Examples of Hardwoods.
Deciduous, expensive, close annual rings, grows very slowly, broad leaves.
Oak, Mahogany, beech,ash
What are the properties of softwoods?
Examples of softwoods.
Evergreens, cheap, annual ring are far apart, grows fast, needle like leaves.
Pine, fir, cedar
What are the two families of plastics?
Examples of each type of plastic.
Thermosetting plastics- urea formaldehyde
Thermoplastics- acrylic, PVC, HIPS
What are the properties of thermoplastics?
It can be Moulded more than once. This is due to its plastic memory.
What are the properties of thermosetting plastics?
It cannot change shape more than once.
Two main categories of Metals.
Properties of the types of metals.
Examples of the types of metals.
Ferrous- contains iron, low carbon steel, stainless steel
Non-Ferrous- contains no iron, aluminium, copper
