Material Properties Flashcards
Toughness
The ability to withstand sudden shock loading without fracture.
Mild steel- used for nails and screws
Ductility
The ability to be drawn or stretched into thinner and smaller section.
Mild steel, copper- used for electrical cables
Malleable
The ability to be deformed by compression without tearing or cracking.
Aluminium- used for car body panels
Elasticity
The ability to return to its original shape once the deforming force has been removed. Every material has a elastic limit, stretched pass this point the shape is permanently deformed.
Plasticity
The ability to change shape without breaking.
Acrylic, ABS
Durability
Ability to withstand weathering, deterioration, corrosion or UV light.
uPVC
Hardness
The ability to withstand abrasive wear and indentation.
Carbon steel or stainless steel- used for kitchen sinks, chisels
