resistant bacteria Flashcards
1
Q
why can bacteria evolve rapidly?
A
they reproduce at a fast rate
2
Q
how does bacteria become resistant?
A
- mutations of bacterial pathogens produce new strains
- some strains might be resistant to antibiotics, so aren’t killed
- they survive and reproduce, so the population of the resistant strain rises
- the resistant strain will then spread because people are not immune to it and there is no effective treatment
3
Q
what strain is resistant to antibiotics?
A
MRSA
4
Q
how can you reduce the development of antibiotic resistant strains?
A
- only prescribe antibiotics when needed e.g serious bacterial infections
- complete full course so none survive and are left to mutate
- restrict agricultural use
