Resistance to social influence - AO3 Flashcards
1
Q
What are strengths for social support?
A
- P: strength = real world research support
- E: Albrecht et al. (2006): evaluated Teen Fresh Start USA, program to help pregnant adolescents resist social presssure to smoke
- E: People who had a mentor or “buddy” were siginificantly less liely to smoke than control with no “buddy”
- L: This shows that social support can help young people resist SI as part of intervention in real world
- P: strength = research support for obedience
- E: Gamson et al (1982): PPs asked in groups to produce evidence for an oil company that would be used against an employee
- E: 29 out of 33 (88%) rebelled against orders; in groups they could have discussed order
- L: This shows that peer suppport can lead to disobedience to undermine a legitimate authority figure

Q
What is a strength of LOC?
A
- P: Strength = research support
- E: Holland (1967): repeated Milgram’s baseline study and measured whether PPs were internal or externals
- E: 37% of internals vs 23% of externals didn’t continue to highest shock
- L: This shows that resistance to social influence is at least partly linked to locus of control, incrreasing its validity as an explanation
