What are strengths for social support?

  • P: strength = real world research support
  • E: Albrecht et al. (2006): evaluated Teen Fresh Start USA, program to help pregnant adolescents resist social presssure to smoke
  • E: People who had a mentor or “buddy” were siginificantly less liely to smoke than control with no “buddy”
  • L: This shows that social support can help young people resist SI as part of intervention in real world

A

  • E: Holland (1967): repeated Milgram’s baseline study and measured whether PPs were internal or externals
  • E: 37% of internals vs 23% of externals didn’t continue to highest shock
  • L: This shows that resistance to social influence is at least partly linked to locus of control, incrreasing its validity as an explanation
