What is a limitation of NSI?

A
  • P: Limitation = does not accurately predict conformity in every case
  • E: Some people are more concerned with being liked by others and fitting in with them
  • E: Mcghee and Teevan (1967) found nAffiliators - students who had a strong need for affiliation - more likely to conform
  • L: NSI underlies conformity more for some than others - there are individual differences

  • E: In Asch’s interviews - Some people conformed to the obvious wrong answer due to fear of dissapproval
  • E: when PPs wrote down answers conformity fell from around 32% to 15%
  • L: Shows some conformity is due to a desire to not be rejected from a group disagreeing with them
