resistance to social influence Flashcards
1
Q
describe social support?
A
-help people to resist obedience + conformity
2
Q
explain conformity in social support?
A
- pressure to conform can be reduced if there are people not conforming present
- when dissenter gave a different wrong answer, it allowed pp to
- when dissenter conformed again so did pp, effect of dissent is not long lasting
3
Q
explain obedience in social support?
A
- pressure to obey can be reduced if there is another person disobeying
4
Q
evaluate research support for resistance to obedience
A
- STRENGTH -In Gamsen’s study there were higher levels of resistance than Milgirm’s study
- maybe because pp’s were in groups -
- 88% pp’s rebelled shows peer support linked to resistance
- Milgrim’s variation obedience fell from 65% to 10% when confederate was present
5
Q
evaluate research support for resistance to conformity
A
STRENGTH
- found conformity decreased in an Asch type situation -dissenter had thick glasses and said he had sight problems
- but when he gave a different answer it allowed pp to do the same
- supports resistence increased w/ social support
6
Q
explain the continuum in locus of control?
A
- people express success and failings different
- -continuum w/ High internal loc on one end and High external loc on the other w/ low internal and external inbetween
7
Q
explain locus of control in locus of control?
A
julian rotter
internals
- high levels of personal control
- likely to resist pressure from others
- take responsibility
externals
- believe in luck
- likely to be influenced by others
- dont have personal control on their lives
8
Q
evaluate contradictory research for locus of control
A
WEAKNESS
- analysed american study into loc over a 40 year period -shows people became more resistant to obedience + external
- if resistance is linked to LOC it would be expected that people become internal over time
- challenged LOC and resistant behaviour
9
Q
evaluate research support for locus of control
A
STRENGTH
- repeated Milgrim’s study to measure if pp’s were internal or external
- 37% of internals and 23% of externals didn’t go to highest shock
- internals show greater resistance
- increased validity of LOC explanation
10
Q
explain how people with High locus of control resist social influence?
A
- resist social pressures
- takes responsibility
- makes decision from own beliefs
- self confident
- intelligent
- less social approval
