Minority influence Flashcards
what is minority influence?
-situations when small group of people influence beliefs of the majority = internalisation
what is the main study and main man
- moscovici
- green side, blue side study
explain the green side, blue side study?
-showed minority influence
-6 people asked to view 36 different coloured slides
-each group had 2 confederates =said slides were green
group 1: in 2/3rd of trials gave same wrong answer =8.5% of trials pp gave same wrong answer
-group2: inconsistent minority=1.25%
-last group had no confederates and got wrong answer on 0.25% of trials
explain consistency?
- over time consistency, increases amount of interest
- people rethink their own views
explain commitment?
-minorities may engage in extreme activities to draw attention
-demonstrates their commitment
-majority pays attention
=augmentation process
explain flexibility
- extreme consistency is off putting + inflexible
- majority may not want to engage
- minority need to adapt their points to be reasonable
explain the process of change?
- when hearing something new, we think about it
- especially when speaker seems passionate
- this is deeper processing meaning sometimes majority become minority
what are the 3 evaluation points?
- research supports consistency
- research supports depth of thought
- limitations of artificial tasks
evaluate research supports consistency
STRENGTH
- moscovici showed consistent minority had greater effect on others than inconsistent opinion
- suggests consitancy is a major factor
evaluate research supports depth of thought
STRENGTH
- research (martin et al) gave pp’s a message supporting a viewpoint and measured support
- had pp’s listen to views from minority that agreed with them
- another group listened to the majority that agreed with their message
- then they were exposed to conflicting views and levels of support were again measured
- found that people were LESS willing to change views if they had listened to a minority and more willing to change opinions if they had listened majority
- shows deeper processing, supports how minority influence works
evaluate research supports artificial tasks
WEAKNESS
- involved identifying the colour of a slide
- artificial and cannot be generalised to real life
- lacks external validity
what is social cryptoamnesia
- memory change occurs but they don’t know it happened
eg. smoking indoors feels like it was banned in the 90’s but it was 2007
what are the steps of minority influence?
- draw attention w/commitment
- consistency/flexibility
- deeper processing
- snowball effect
- social cryptoamnesia
