Resistance To Social Influence Flashcards
What influence does social support have on conformity?
Presence of a dissenter From majority reduces the effect of conformity. (People can resist NSI)
What effect does social support have on obedience?
Eg. Milgram presence of a disobedient confederate with the PPS obedience dropped from 65% to 10%
Who investigated locus of control?
Rotter
Explain internal locus of control
Controlled by themselves/ the individual is in control and blames self for actions/ consequences
Describe external locus of control
Controlled by others/ blame others for bad consequences that happens to the individual
Explain continuum in LOC
It’s a scale babe
High external —> external —> internal —> high internal
Are internal LOC more likely to resist social pressures or externals?
Internals: more self confident and achievement drived
So find it easier to resist
Identify and explain the supporting evidence for social support as an explanation for resistance to social influence (AO3)
Allen and Levine
Conformity decreases in Asch style experiment when one dissenter present. Even occurred when the dissenter wore thick glasses and said they couldn’t see! Dissenter allows PPS to be free from group pressure.
Describe the supporting evidence for LOC (AO3)
Holland repeated milgrams experiment
37% internal did not give max shock
23% external did not give max shock
Increases validity of LOC
Identify and explain the contradictory research surrounding LOC (AO3)
Twenge
Analysed data from USA LOC studies over 40yr period
Over time more resistant to obedience but more external
If resistance linked to internals then this suggests people should become more internal over time not external
