Conformity: Types And Explanations Flashcards
What is internalisation?
Private and public change of behaviour
What is identification?
Conform to a group to fit in as we identify with the particular group. No private change
What is compliance?
Public change no private change (‘go along with’)
What is informational social influence?
Conform to get the right answer
Eg. May not know the answer to hard maths questions so copy someone else
What is normative social influence?
Conform to be liked/ fit the group norm. Usually occurs when surrounded by strangers where you feel worried about rejection
What is the supporting evidence for informational social influence? (AO3)
Lucas et al
Give answers to maths questions either easy or hard. More conformity to incorrect answers when hard. Although true for students who viewed their maths ability as poorer
What is a limitation of normative social influence? (AO3)
People less concerned with being liked are less effected by NSI. People with greater need for affiliation = nAffiliators. Students in need for a high level of affiliation are more likely to conform (NSI)
What is a limitation of the ‘two process model’ (AO3)
Both NSI and ISI are involved. Conformity reduced when a dissenting PPS present (Asch). Reduced NSI as provides social support. ISI reduced as provides an alternate information source.
