Resistance To Social Influence Flashcards
The 3 factors for resisting social influence are….
Systematic processing
Morality
Personality
What support also affects it?
Social
In Asch’s study just having one dissenter meant
Conformity dropped sharply
Another determiner when there was a disseneter was…
How long it took for them to speak out. The shorter the time the greater the chances of rallying people in Asch’s study
Allen and levine did what?
Found conformity dropped on visual tasks when the dissenting partner even wore glasses and admitted to having sight problems
Status might also be a factor, who showed this and more importantly how?
Richardson: 84 male and female students assigned to groups of 3, 2 was a confederates.
. They all introduced themselves, biographical details mostly about their achievements and level of education
. They were then asked to choose to invest in 1 of 2 stock companies, 1 of them being the obvious better choice
. The confederates always picked the obviously worse one
The result of Richardson’s study….
. People who perceived themselves of a lower status to the confederates conformed more often to their obviously bad investment judgement. People use competence based clues to decide whether they’ll conform as this is normative social influence.
What did Tarnow find? The plane incidents meta analysis.
They found evidence that suggested that most plane incidents were caused because a co-pilot was afraid to speak up against the captain’s judgement.
North West air flight 5719 is a good example of ….
Good example of the loss of life that could be averted if the social hierarchy at workplaces didn’t make people conform
