Milgram Flashcards
Particpant number in Milgram’s study
40
Participant age range in Milgram’s study
20-50
Name of “learner”
Mr Wallace
Obedience rate of the original experiment
62%
At ______ volts the learner protested
150
From _____ volts the learner no longer reacted
330
40% in relation to Milgram…?
The rate of conformity when the researcher attempted to physically force the hand of the participant
The conformity rate dropped again when Milgram held the
Experiment in an empty office block instead of the psychology department at Yale University
What conclusion was drawn when the conformity was lower in the office block?
The location delegitimised the authority of the researcher
What are the three variations?
- Proximity
- location
- hand being forced to electrocute the learner
. And Bickman could be seen as evidence for the codification of the researcher’s uniform.
Bickman found
19% - pedestrian
13% - milkman
30% - security guard
Gameson posed another interpretation of why Milgram’s participants obeyed, what was it?
He posed that they socially identified more with the figure of authority, as they also were granted authority over the learner. In order to please this other authority and forfil there own roles they obeyed. Social identification theory.
Social identification theory better explains the case of
Adolf Eichman and other nazis. They were ideologically aligned with their party and so would’ve identified with those giving orders. They weren’t altogether just submissive.
