Resistance Exercise Flashcards
Refers to the capacity of a muscle to do work (force x distance).
MUSCLE PERFORMANCE
Factors that affect muscle performance?
morphological qualities
size of sarcomeres
neurological, biochemical, and biomechanical influences
metabolic
cardiovascular
respiratory
cognitive
To anticipate, respond to, and control the forces applied to the body and carry out the physical demands of everyday life, the body’s muscles must be able to produce, sustain, and regulate muscle tension to meet these demands.
MUSCLE PERFORMANCE
Any form of active exercise in which dynamic or static muscle contraction is resisted by an outside force applied manually or mechanically.
RESISTANCE EXERCISE
high intensity, low volume
Strength
high intensity, low duration/decrease in time
low intensity, high reps/volume, low duration
Power
When deficits in muscle performance place a person at risk for injury or hinder function, the use of resistance exercise is an appropriate therapeutic intervention
STRENGTH, POWER, AND ENDURANCE
high volume, high duration, low intensity
Endurance
Ability of the neuromuscular system to produce, reduce, or control forces, contemplated or imposed, during functional activities, in a smooth, coordinated manner.
Functional Strength
Systematic procedure of a muscle or muscle group lifting, lowering, or controlling heavy loads (resistance) for a relatively low number of repetitions or over a short period of time.
STRENGTH TRAINING
Greatest measurable force that can be exerted by a muscle to overcome resistance during single maximum
The ability of contractile tissue to produce tension and a resultant force based on the demands placed on the muscle.
MUSCLE STRENGTH
Highest amount of work
The rate at which a muscle contracts and produces a resultant force.
Amount of work that can be done in. a specific period o ftime
How much work can be done ina specific time
MUSCLE POWER
The greater the intensity of the exercise and the shorter the time period taken to generate force, the greater is the muscle power.
Power Training
Ability to perform low-intensity, repetitive, or sustained activities over a prolonged period of time.
ENDURANCE
Characterized by having a muscle contract and lift or lower a light load for many repetitions or sustain a muscle contraction for an extended period of time.
ENDURANCE TRAINING
