Range of Motions Flashcards
Define Range of Motion
full motion possible
joint range and muscle range
Joint Range or Muscle Range
Focused on the Degree of Freedom
Joint Range
What is the point where the muscle can no longer shorten
Active insufficiency
Joint Range or Muscle Range
Uses a Goniometer for measurement
Joint Range
Joint Range or Muscle Range
Associated with Functional Excursion
Muscle Range
What is the length a muscle is capable of shortening after being fully elongated
Functional Excursion
Joint Range or Muscle Range
There is no specific device used to measure this
Muscle Range
In PROM the external force can come from?
Physical Therapist
Equipment
Gravity
Another part of the patient’s body
PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS/BENEFITS of PROM
⬇️Decrease secondary complications —> contracture
⬆️ Increase blood flow
⬇️Decrease pain, ⬆️relaxation
⬆️Increase tissue healing
precursor for stretching
Maintains tissue elasticity
What is the point where the muscle can no longer lengthen
Passive insufficiency
Facilitation of movement through UNRESTRICTED RANGE OF MOTION via EXTERNAL FORCES
PASSIVE RANGE OF MOTION EXERCISES
What are the indications for PROM?
If pt cannot actively move the body segment
If pt is not supposed to move the body part
Other uses for PROM
Examination (ROM)
used to Teach active range of motion activities
can induce relaxation = decrease pain
Facilitation of movement through UNRESTRICTED RANGE OF MOTION via ACTIVE MUSCLE CONTRACTION
ACTIVE RANGE OF MOTION EXERCISES (AROME)
Limitations of PROM
it does not reduce atrophy
di nag cocontract yung muscle
it does not increase strength
it does not increase blood flow compared to Active Range of Motion Exercises
T or F
If pt has a radial fx, PROM can still be done sa wrist, elbow, and shoulder jnt
FALSE
If pt has a radial fx, AROME can stil be done sa wrist, elbow, and shoulder jnt
INDICATIONS for AROME
assessment
if the pt. has adequate muscle strength
above and below immobilized segment
if you want to initiate with strengthening exercises
aerobic conditioning
LIMITATION of AROME
does not increase strength in strong muscle
does not increase coordination -> not including patterns
PHYSIOLOGICAL BENEFITS of AROME
same benefits with PROME but more
Muscle elasticity is maintained
Cause improvement is strength
Moving through UNRESTRICTED MOVEMENT or pt’s that require ASSISTANCE in completing range
ACTIVE AASSISTIVE RANGE OF MOTION EXERCISES
INDICATIONS of AAROME
Weak musculature (Grade 2-3 / 5)
Process is PROME -> AAROME -> AROME
SAROME is given for Home instructions for pt or gusto maging independent si pt sa clinic (pwede AROME or AAROME)
Question: Your Patient has an Acute inflamed tissue, what type of ROM will you utilize? Why?
Use PROM (less painful for the pt)
CONTRAINDICATIONS to performing ROM exercises
If procedure is DISRUPTIVE TO HEALING PROCESS
if RESPONSE to exercise is LIFE-THREATENING
