Research utilization
> is the process of using research findings to improve PT care
> involves implementing sound research -based innovations in clinical practice
> dissemination of scientific knowledge
> critique of studies
> synthesis of research findings
> determining applicability of findings for practice
> developing an evidence-informed standard or guideline
> implementing the standard
> evaluating the practice change with respect to staff, PTs, and cost/resource utilization
Define evidence-based practice
> is the conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual PTs
> incorporating evidence from research.
Evidence-informed practice
> is the conscientious and judicious use of current best evidence in conjunction with clinical expertise and PT values to guide health care decisions
Identify barriers to using research in nursing practice
evidence-informed practice is influenced by:
1) the nature of the innovation (ex. the type and strength of the evidence; the clinical topic)
> the effectiveness
> compatibility of values, norms, perceived needs of users
2) and the manner in which it is communicated (disseminated) to the members (nurses) of a social system (organization, nursing profession)
> interpersonal communication channels
> methods of communicating
> influences among social networks of users affect adoption of evidence-informed practice
> use of mass media, opinion leaders, change champions, experts,…

the terms research utilization and evidence-informed practice are sometimes used interchangeably.
They are related but not the same
Research utilization- process of using research findings to improve practice
Evidence-informed practice- broad term that not only encompasses use of research findings but also other types of evidence such as case reports and expert opinion in deciding the evidence base that informs practice.
there are 2 forms of evidence use:
Conceptual and decision driven
Ethics
> must have the participants consent and consent from the organizations with which you will do the research
informed consent
research ethics board
