Research Questions Flashcards
Research hypothesis
A testable statement.
Alternative hypothesis
When there is a relationship between the two variables being studied.
Directional hypothesis
When there is a positive correlation between two variables. e.g. Pets cause lower levels of stress.
Non directional hypothesis
It does not predict the direction of the relationship. e.g. Pets affect stress levels.
Null hypothesis
No effect. e.g. Pets have no effect on stress levels.
Independent variable
Something which is being manipulated.
Dependent variable
Something which is being measured.
Co-variables
The variables investigated in a correlation.
Operationalisation of variables
How you define and measure a specific variable.
Confounding variables
Variables you have no control over, e.g. weather.
Extraneous variables
Variables which you can control, e.g. lighting.
Format for reporting psychological research.
