Kohlberg undertook various studies related to moral development.
What research method did he use and why?
He used interviews to collect qualitative data.
What type of study was it?
It was a longitudinal study.
Describe the sample.
- Kohlberg studied 75 American boys from the ages of 10-16 to the ages of 22-28.
- A cross cultural comparison was also used; he studied people in Great Britain, Canada, Taiwan, Mexico and Turkey.
What did Kohlberg do to assess moral thinking?
To assess moral thinking, Kohlberg created 9 hypothetical moral dilemmas. Each presented a conflict between two moral issues.
Each participant was asked to discuss three of these dilemmas prompted by what type of question?
An open ended question.
What are two of the dilemmas?
- ‘Should Heinz steal the drug? Why or why not?’.
If the respondent favours stealing, ask, ‘If Heinz doesn’t love his wife, should he steal the drug for her? Why or why not?’
What happened with the boys’ answers?
The boys’ answers were analysed and common themes were identified so that the stage theory could be constructed.
How often was each boy interviewed?
Every 3 years.
What kind of interview was used with the participants in other countries.
The same kind of interview was used.
