Research Process Flashcards
Name the five stages of the research process
Theory stage Hypothesis Operationalisation Fieldwork Processing of results
Describe the theory stage of the research process
Researcher examines all existing theories on their chosen topic, leading them to formulate a specific hypothesis
Describe the hypothesis stage of the research process
Researcher whittles ideas down to a specific statement or series of statements and predictions which they then test by carrying out research.
A hypothesis is a statement to prove/disprove
Describe the operationalisation stage of the research process
Researcher describes how they are going to put the research into practice
4 substages- defining concepts, choosing a sample, choosing a method, deciding on specific measurements
Describe the fieldwork stage of the research process
Research is carried out by the chosen method identified in the operationalisation stage using a relevant sample
Describe the processing of results stage of the research process
Researchers collate and analyse findings to see if they confirm or refute the hypothesis. Results are then presented in journals, books, articles etc.
