Research Methods Flashcards
Main features of structured interviews?
Closed, preset questions
Face to face
Primary, quantitative research
Limited responses
Advantages of structured interviews?
Quick response rate
Easily quantifiable
Respondents can get clarification if needed
Gain factual information well
Disadvantages of structured interviews?
Costly
High researcher and respondent involvement time
Preset questions cannot be explored
Possible dishonesty out of face-face embarrassment or shame
Main features of focus groups?
Primary, qualitative research
Select individuals have an organised discussion
Aims to get a representative example of a larger population
Advantages of focus groups?
Participants will naturally mention new ideas
Individuals may feel more confident to discuss topics if others are discussing them too
Answers can be reflected on
Disadvantages of focus groups?
May be difficult to record all data at once
Dominant participants may take over the discussion
Some participants may change their answers to conform with the group
Possible dishonesty due to embarrassment
Ethical issues- sensitive topics may be discussed, confidentiality cannot be guaranteed
Main features of participant observation?
Researcher becomes a participant
Qualitative, primary research
Getting in, staying in, getting out
Pearson (2009) Blackpool FC
Advantages of participant observation?
An in-depth understanding of social behaviour is gained
Realistic view of social behaviour
Explores issues of feelings, meanings, interactions and processes behind social behaviour
Disadvantages of participant observation?
High researcher involvement
High costs
Results may become biased
Researcher may have to take part in illegal acts
Findings can be difficult to generalise
Participants are deceived
Difficult to quantify data due to descriptiveness
Main features of non-participant observation?
Qualitative, primary research
Researcher observes social behaviour of others without actively participating in the group being studied
Observations are recorded at the time, data is taken at face value
Advantages of non-participant observation?
Beneficial in describing ‘natural’ behaviour
In-depth picture of social behaviour if group is unaware of researchers presence
Disadvantages of non-participant observation?
High input time
High costs
Results are difficult to quantify
No exploration of the behaviour is made because it is taken at face value
Ethical issues- no consent to being observed
Main features of case studies?
Qualitative, secondary source of data
One event/case is examined over time
Finds specific information about a specific topic
Advantages of case studies?
Cases can be analysed with detail and depth which generates ideas for future research
Other research methods can be combined to complement case studies
Disadvantages of case studies?
Time consuming and demanding
Information may only apply to one specific case
Information may be difficult to collect and quantify
