Research Methods: Content/Thematic Analysis KR Flashcards
What two ways do we use to analyse Qualitative data?
Content and thematic analysis
What is qualitative data?
Data that is expressed in words/ descriptive data
How is qualitative data analysed?
through content and thematic analysis
Content analysis is similar to any observational study, however, how does the researcher usually make observations
indirectly though books, films, ads, interviews and photos
How does content analysis analyse qualitative data?
it converts qualitative data to quantitative data
How does content analysis convert qual data to quant data?
it identifies meaningful codes then tallies everytime it appears
After Tallying, how is the data displayed?
on a graph/table
What is meant by a code?
a code is just a category identified in the qual data
What is meant by coding?
the process of placing qual data into meaningful categories
What are the four steps of content analysis?
- Read/ view qual data
- create code
- reread and tally
- present data in a graph/table
Which step is missing from content analysis?
- Read/ view qual data
- create code
- present data in a graph/table
- reread and tally

- read/view qual data
Which step is missing from content analysis?

- present data in a graph/table
- create a code
Where do the marks come from when discussing the process of content and thematic analysis?
A02: you must provide examples
What is meant by Thematic analysis?
a method of analysing qualitative date by identifying themes
What is meant by a theme?
a pattern within a set of qualitative data
What themes might be present when analyzing a teenage girls diary?
Love, friendship, hobbies, family etc.
What themes might be present in a transcript of a football match?
Goals, passes, defending, strike etc.
How does thematic analysis present data?
keeping the data qualitative
How is thematic analysis different to content analysis?
Thematic analysis keeps qualitative data qualitative where as content converts it to quantitative data.
Summarise the process of thematic analysis into 4 points
- read and reread the transcript
- identify codes
- combine codes into themes
- present the data in qualitative format
Which part of the process in thematic analysis is missing?
- read and reread the transcript
- combine codes into themes
- present the data in qualitative format
- identifying codes
Which part of the process in thematic analysis is missing?
- identify codes
- combine codes into themes
- present the data in qualitative format
- read and reread the transcript
Which part of the process in thematic analysis is missing?
- read and reread the transcript
- identify codes
- present the data in qualitative format
- combine the codes into themes
Which part of the process in thematic analysis is missing?
- read and reread the transcript
- identify codes
- combine codes into themes
- present the data in a qualitative format
A03: what is a strength of ways of analysing qualitative data?
it is easy to assess the reliability using inter-rater reliability
A03: why is it easy to assess the reliability on content and thematic analysis?
as it uses codes which can be operationalised and other researchers can use them
A03: What is a weakness of ways of analysing Qualitative data?
research bias
A03: why is thematic and content analysis open to researcher bias?
the researcher has to identify the codes which means they interpret the data
A03: Why is it a weakness that researchers have to interpret the data?
They are aware of the hypothesis and therefore more likely to identify codes that support their hypothesis
A03: if thematic and content analysis is subject to researcher bias, what type of validity is affected and why?
internal: we are no longer measuring what we intend to.
A03 what is a potential counter to researcher bias?
Modern analysts are aware of their own bias and reference this in their report.
