Research Methods Flashcards
Aim of the Research
What researchers intend to find during study
Research Hypothesis
Testable statement about the relationship between variables
Alternative Hypothesis
An alternative to null hypothesis, it is any hypothesis except the null
Experimental Hypothesis
The main Hypothesis
Directional Hypothesis
Predicts a difference between two groups or two conditions and stating which direction
Non-Directional Hypothesis
Predicts a difference between two groups or conditions without stating the direction
Null Hypothesis
Predicts there is no difference between variables being studied
Independent Variable (IV)
The variable that is changed to test effects of Dependent Variable (DV)
Dependent Variable (DV)
The variable that is measured during an experiment
Co-variables
Variables in a correlation, they must be continuous and related
Operationalisation of Variables
Making sure that variables can be easily tested
Confounding Variables
Variable thats not the IV but may cause changes to the DV. This will make the outcome meaningless and therefore it will be confounded
Extraneous Variables
A variable that does not act as an alternative IV but may cause changes in the DV
