Methodologies Flashcards
Experiments
A research method where conclusions can be drawn because an IV has affected a DV
Quasi-experiments
Where the IV is not purposely manipulated meaning its not possible to claim changes to the DV
Natural Experiments
This is where the IV changes naturally, the DV may be tested in a laboratory
Difference Studies
Similar to Natural Experiments but the IV is simply a difference between people that exists
Participants Observations
Observations made by someone who is also participating in the activity
Non-participant Observation
The observer is seperate from the people being observed
Content Analysis
Behaviour is observed indirectly in written or verbal material. Examples: Interviews, Diaries, TV Programmes etc.
Structured Interviews
Any interview in which the questions are decided in advance
Questionnaires
Data thats collected through the use of written questions
Semi- Structured Interviews
The interview starts out with some general aims and questions and lets the respondents answers guide to related and succesive questions
Correlations Studies
Determines if a relationship exists between two or more variables
Positive Correlation
This is when two variables increase together
Negative Correlation
This is when two variables decrease together
Case Studies
A research investigation that involves a detailed study of a single subject
Self Reports
Data collection method that involves a participant describing their behaviour in the form of a questionnaire, interview or diary study
Longitudinal Research
Study conducted over a long period of time, usually a set of repeated measures in which participants are assessed on two or more occasions as they get older
Cross-sectional studies
A group of participants representing a section of society compared to another group
Quantitative Data
Data in numbers
Qualitative Data
Non-numerical data
Primary Sources
Information observed or collected directly from first-hand experiences/research
Secondary Sources
Information used in a research study that was collected by someone else or for a purpose other than the current one
