Research methods Flashcards
Independent variable
Is whatever is being manipulated in the experiment. The IV brings about change in the experiment.
Dependent variable
Is whatever is being measured or calculated in the experiment. It is dependent on the IV.
Extraneous variable
Is the object of an experiment to prove A causes B. For example if I wanted to prove that smoking causes heart issues. What are the EV’s?
What are the different types of research designs?
Independent groups design
Matched participants design
Repeated measures design
Independent groups
Participants are randomly allocated to either the experimental or control group.
Matched participants
Participants are paired on the basis of similar characteristics. One of the pair are allocated to the experimental group and the other to the control group.
Repeated measures
The same group of participants makes up both the experimental and control groups.
