RESEARCH METHODS Flashcards
Importance of Research Methods
The Reliability and Accuracy of results it provides The ability to analyse reaserach can be applied
Why is experimetal research relevant to pyschology?
It is a scientific subject of mental processes and bahviours in humans Psychology is a science
Scientific Method- What is it?
a LOGICAL eight step process of SOLVING applied in all sciences
What are the EIGHT steps of the scientific method?
- Make observations2. Gather information3. Form a hypothesis4. Experimental design5. Perform experiment (Collect data)6. Analyse Data7. Come to a conclusion8. Replicate Study
What is the purpose of experimental research?
- CAUSE AND EFFECT: Enable us to investigate the manipulation of the variables
- CONTROL OF VARIABLES: Enables isolation and observance of variable that has been selected as key (IV/ DV) REPLICATION of study enables our confidence if the same/simular results are compiled after repaeating the same study
What is a HYPOTHESIS
It is the statement of a casual relationship between the IV and the DV
The Charecteristics of a hypothesis?
- Begins with”It was hypothesised that…”
- That
- Who (Population)
- Will (Direction/ anticipated result increase/ decrease)
- When (IV/ DV r-ship stated)
Alcohol use and performance on a balance beam
It was hypothesised that over 18’s Australian’s will have decrease performance pon balance beam wjile ontoxicated than compared to 18 year old Australians with no alcohol in their system
School uniform policy and ATAR score
It is hypothesised that St Columbas year 12 senior students will achieve a a higher ATAR score when they adhere to a uniform policy compared to those STCC year 12’s who do not follow a School uniform policy.
Intelligence and annual salary
It is hypothesised that employeeswith a higher intelligence will gain a higher annual salary compared to those who do not have a high intelligence and therefore have a lower salary.
Stress level and number of hours worked
It is hypothesised that year 12 students who have low stress levels will work more hours compared to those year 12 students with high stress levels wh owill work less hours
Hypothesis: What is its purpose?
- Acts a basis to compare two OR more variables on
- -Compares behaviours in different CONDITIONS either natural ot created or controlled by reasearchers
- Evidence and research can either be
- REJECTED OR SUPPORTED
Aim: What is its purpose?
To investigate / study/ examine/ analyse…
Variables: What is the purpose?
To construct a hypothesis or conduct research we need variable.
What are some expamples of variables?
age, gender, height, hrs slept each day and number of cookies eaten…
