Research Methods Flashcards
Use of laboratory experiment?
Study cause and effect in an artificial, controlled setting in a scientific way.
2 advantages of laboratory experiment:
- Controlled setting means extraneous variables are minimised
- Standardised procedures means experiment can be repeated
1 disadvantage of laboratory experiment:
- Lacks ecological validity
Use of field experiment:
Study cause and effect in the participants natural setting.
1 advantage of field experiment:
- Ecologically valid
1 disadvantage of field experiment:
- Less control so increased chance of extraneous variables
Use of natural experiment:
Study cause and effect where the independent variable is naturally occurring.
1 advantage of natural experiment:
- Can students variables that would be unethical to manipulate
1 disadvantage of natural experiment:
- Cannot randomly allocate participants, so increased chance of extraneous variables
Use of quasi experiment:
Study cause and effect where the independent variable is a difference between people that already exist.
1 advantage of quasi experiment:
- Allows comparisons between types of people
1 disadvantage of quasi experiment:
- Can’t randomly allocate participants, so there is an increased chance of extraneous variables.
Use of studies using correlational analysis
Look for a relationship between two co-variables
1 advantage of studies using correlational analysis:
- Study variables that would be unethical to manipulate
1 disadvantage of studies using correlational analysis:
- Do not establish cause and effect (effect may be caused by another variable)
1 advantage of using questionnaires :
- Can gather a large amount of data quickly
1 disadvantage of using questionnaires:
- Not all data will be true (people can lie) , so results are invalid
1 advantage of interviews:
- Provides detailed information/data.
1 disadvantage of interviews:
- Can be impractical to conduct as they are time consuming.
1 advantage of case studies:
- Provides detailed information/data
1 disadvantage of case studies:
- Unable to generalise results from atypical individuals
What are naturalistic observations?
Watching and recording participants behaviour in their natural setting.
1 advantage of naturalistic observations:
- High ecological validity
2 disadvantages of naturalistic observations:
- Lack of control means low reliability
- Lack of control means higher chance of extraneous variables
What are controlled observations?
Watching and recording participants behaviour in a structured environment where variables are managed.
1 advantage of controlled observations:
- More control over extraneous variables increases chance of replication.
1 disadvantage of controlled observations:
- Lacks ecological validity
What are covert observations?
Participants behaviour is watched an reordered without their knowledge or consent.
1 advantage of covert observations:
- Data is more valid as participants do not know they are being observed.
1 disadvantage of covert observations
- Unethical as participants do not know they are being observed
What are overt observations?
Participants behaviour is watched and recorded with their knowledge and consent:
1 advantage of overt observations:
- Ethical
1 disadvantage of overt observations:
- Participants behaviour may change as they are aware they are being watched, making results invalid.
What are the three types of an experimental design?
- Independent measures
- Repeated measures
- Matched pairs
How do independent measures designs work?
There are different participants in each condition.
How do repeated measures designs work?
Participants take part in both conditions.
How do matched participants designs work?
There are different participants in each conditions but they are matched on key variables
1 advantage of independent measures design:
- No order effects
1 disadvantage of independent measures design:
- Participant variables
1 advantage of repeated measures design:
- No participant variables
1 disadvantage of repeated measures design:
- Order effects
1 advantage of matched participants design:
- No order effects
1 disadvantage of matched participants design:
- Can be time consuming and difficult to find participants who match
