Research methods Flashcards
What is a covert observation?
An observation where the participant does not know they are being observed.
What is an overt observation?
An observation where the participant knows they are observed.
What is a correlation coefficient?
To measure the strength of a correlation (the relationship between two or more variables). A correlation coefficient can range between -1.0 (perfect negative) and +1.0 (perfect positive).
What is a self-report technique?
When a participant provides details of their own feelings/thoughts/behaviours.
What is a limitation of a self-report technique?
A limitation is the results provided are not objective and have questionable validity.
What is Likert scale question?
Strongly agree - strongly disagree question
What is a nominal question?
Yes/No question
What is a Field experiment?
Conducted in a natural setting but IV is altered.
What is a Quasi experiment?
Quasi-experiments contain a naturally occurring IV. However, in a quasi-experiment, the naturally occurring IV is a difference between people that already exists (i.e. gender, age). The researcher examines the effect of this variable on the dependent variable (DV).
What is a lab experiment?
A lab experiment is an experiment that uses a carefully controlled setting and standardised procedure to accurately measure how changes in the independent variable (IV; variable that changes) affects the dependent variable (DV; variable measured).
What is a natural experiment?
Natural experiments are conducted in every day (i.e., real life) environment of the participants, but here the experimenter has no control over the independent variable as it occurs naturally in real life.
What is qualitative data
Data which is non-numerical and is rich in in-depth data such as pictures or words.
What is quantitative data?
Data which is numerical and can be counted.
What is operationalization?
Ensuring that variables are all in a form that can be measured and tested.
Explain order effects.
If a participant is made to partake in more than one condition as the primary condition may affect the secondary condition.
