Research methods Flashcards
What is a hypothesis?
A hypothesis is a precise testable statement of what the researchers predict will be the outcome of the study. It is stated at the start of the study
What is the alternative hypothesis
It is the hypothesis that states there is a relationship between the variables being studied (one variable has an effect on the other.
It states that the results are not due to chance and that they are significant.
What is the null hypotheisis
The hull hypothesis states that there is on relationship between the 2 variables being studied
It states results are due to chance and are not significant.
What is a 2 tailed hypothesis.
It is a hypothesis that predicts that the independent variable will have an effect on the dependant variable but the direction is not specified.
what is a one tailed hypothesis
a one tailed hypothesis predicts the nature of the effect on the IV on the DV it predicts in which direction the change will take place e.g. greater, smaller, less, more.
What is generalisability
It refers to the extent to which we can apply the findings of our research to the target population.
What is a biased sample
A biased sample is when certain groups are over or under represented in the sample selected.
For example if only males are selected in a study it may be a biased sample.
What is random sampling
A sample where every member of a population has an equal chance of being selected.
