Descriptive statistics Flashcards
1
Q
What is the mean
A
The arithmetic average of all scores in a set of data
2
Q
What is the mode
A
The number that appears the most often in a set of data
3
Q
what is the median
A
The middle number in a set of data
4
Q
what is standard deviation
A
A measure of variability of a set of scores or values within a group that indicates how narrowly or broadly they differ from the mean .
5
Q
how is standard deviation calculated
A
- Work out the mean and subtract it from every score
- Square the differences between the scores and the mean and add these up to give the sum of squares
- Divide the sum of squares by the number of data points - 1
- Square root the number to get standard deviation.
6
Q
What is the range
A
Describes the spread of scores in a distribution.
7
Q
What is the variance
A
Is a measure of variation from the mean of squared deviation scores.
