Research Method: Sampling Techniques Flashcards
What is a random sample type?
A random technique where participants all have equal chance of being selected.
Eg: drawing names from a hat.
What is a stratified sample?
Participants that are selected from different subgroups of population to represent their frequency in society.
What is a volunteer sample?
A sample of participants produced by asking for people to take part. Eg: advertisement.
What is an opportunity sample?
Selecting people who are easily available at the time of the study.
What is a strength of random sample types?
+Unbiased: everyone has equal chance of being picked.
-Not all participants will agree so may end up being biased.
What is a negative of random sampling?
-Takes time and effort because you need a list of your entire target population.
What is a strength of stratified sampling?
+Most representative sampling techniques as all subgroups are represented.
What is a weakness of stratified sampling?
-Lengthy process and participants selected may decide not to take part.
What is a strength of volunteer sampling?
+Convenient way to find willing participants for time consuming research. Volunteers are less likely to drop out.
What are the weaknesses of volunteer samples?
-Biased as volunteer participants are likely to be highly motivated than the postulation in general.
What is a strength of opportunity samples?
+Convent and needs little preparation.
What is a weakness of opportunity samples?
-Biased because sample odd drawn from small part of target population meaning it’s not representative.
