Research Method: Qualitative Data Flashcards
What are 2 advantages of using qualitative data?
+Holistic: represents human behaviour without reducing it to numbers.
+Provides rich details on how people think and behave as they are given free range.
What are 2 disadvantages of using qualitative data?
-Difficult to detect patterns and draw conclusions because there is a large variety of answers.
-Interpreting answers is subjective lowering credibility.
What is thematic analysis?
A techniques to analyse qualitative data by theming and tallying when each category comes up. This organises data and allows conclusions to be drawn.
What is grounded theory?
A bottom-up technique used when analysing qualitative data. The categories that emerge are ‘grounded’ in the data.
Describe the 5 steps of thematic analysis.
- Read and reread the answers.
- Break the data into units and assign a name to each unit.
- Themes created by grouping units.
- Reread the text to ensure themes are accurately allocated.
- Conclusions drawn.
