Research and Competitive Analysis [Understand] Flashcards
What is a competitor analysis?
An assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of your competitors
Research is one of the first steps of the Design Thinking process. What do you begin to understand from this research in terms of competitive analysis?
One of the first steps in the design thinking process is research—that is, getting to know the problem space you’re operating within. It’s important to get a feel for what kinds of issues are related to the problem you’re investigating and to take a look at what solutions to similar problems have already been proposed
What features or elements might you look at (for a digital product/app) to carry out a competitive analysis?
- Launch experience (splash, onboarding, sign up/log in)
- Navigation
- Buttons (placed clearly, readable)
- Options/Settings (placed clearly, too many/few options)
- Difficulty/ease of task completion
What actions do you take from a competitor’s product analysis in your own designs?
- You’ll see what standard design elements users will come to expect when using similar products. - - You’ll be able to use this knowledge to implement positive features in your own designs (while avoiding the negative features)
