Where do quotation marks go?
At the beginning AND end of a quote.
What do quotation marks do?
Quotation marks tell the reader that something is being quoted–that someone said those specific words.
They know WHAT was said by that person/source because their words will be copied down exactly the way they said/wrote them, AND they will be placed inside of quotation marks.

Why is it important to cite your sources?
It is important to cite your sources:
- to show where you got your information from
- to give credit to the person you got the information from
- to avoid plagiarism
2 points possible
What goes inside of the parentheses?
Inside of the parentheses will go:
1. AUTHOR’S LAST NAME
- if no author, then the TITLE OF THE ARTICLE/BOOK
If the source is a book, what else will go in the parentheses?
Author’s last name
**Page number where the info is located
What is plagiarism?
Plagiarism is stealing someone else’s work/information by not giving them credit for it. IT IS ALSO USING SOMEONE ELSE’S WORK AND PRETENDING THAT IT IS YOUR OWN.
Plagiarism is both dishonest and illegal. You will get an automatic zero if you plagiarize, can get kicked out of school (especially when you are in college), and other disciplinary actions depending.
If you use three or more words sequentially from your source, you are __________ (paraphrasing/plagiarizing).
Plagiarizing
2 points possible
How can you avoid plagiarism?
- Read the whole section/document, then look away from the source and write it IN YOUR OWN WORDS! Pretend that you’re explaining it to someone else who did not understand the article and is needing you to explain it to them differently. RESIST THE URGE TO PEEK AT THE ARTICLE.
- Ask a teacher/librarian for assistance.
What should you do if you aren’t sure if you’ve plagiarized or not?
Ask a teacher/librarian to look it over for you. That’s what we’re here for–to help you! :)
What is different between quoting and paraphrasing?
Quoting is word-for-word (exactly) what the person said.
Paraphrasing is in your own words.
Quoting is placed in quotation marks.
Paraphrasing is not.
What is similar between quoting and paraphrasing?
Both give important information.
Both need to be cited so that the reader can know where the author got their information.
The citation will be in parentheses at the end of the segment (quote or paraphrase).
