research Flashcards
What is the formula in this scenario?
r(998) = -0.57, P<.05.
What is the formula?
r(sample size minus 2) = Pearson correlation, sig < or > .05.
APA format formula in a sentence?
The average hours playing video games per day is moderately positively associated with a students GPA, r (998), = .57, .042 < .05.
What are the three correlation levels?
0.1 to 0.39 weak
0.4 to 0.59 moderate
0.6 to 0.9 strong
How would you construct a hypothesis for this scenario?
H1: A higher average of hours students spent playing video games (x-independent variable) will result in a students decreased GPA (y dependent variable).
What is the x variable?
Independent
What is the y variable?
Dependents
What scientific method would you use to test your hypothesis?
When examining a relationship, there must be data. The objective is to determine if there is a correlation between the two variables and if there is how significant.
What is quantitative research?
Quantitative research focuses on setting hypothesis and explaining the findings through a numerical analysis.
What probability and sample method would you use?
For this survey, I would administer a probability sampling technique that would consist of cluster sampling.
What is a cluster sample?
A cluster sample involves sampling a population and dividing them into subgroups but each population shares common characteristics.
What is an example of cluster sampling in Columbia?
If I were sampling fraternity students at the university of South Carolina that would be my population which would consist of 200 fraternity members at USC. I would then divide the population into four separate fraternities (subgroups) consisting of 50 members each. Of those 50 fraternity members, 10 would be freshman, 10 would be sophomore, 10 would be junior, 10 would be seniors, and 10 would be 6th years.
If I did students at the university of south caroling as my population – 4 subgroups students located on campus, downtown/main, Olympia, and forest acres.
