Required Practicals - Density Flashcards
What is the objective of the density practical?
To find the density of irregular and regular shaped solid objects.
What is the formula for density?
Density (kg/m3) = mass (kg) / volume (m3)
What are regular objects?
Objects that have dimensions we can measure easily using a ruler.
What are irregular objects?
Objects whose dimensions cannot easily be measured.
How do we determine the density of regulat objects?
Use a mass balance, by first zeroing the balance and placing the object onto it, then recording mass.
Use a ruler to measure the length of each side.
Take the length measured (if a cube) and raise it to the power of three.
Divide the mass measured by the volume to calculate density.
How do we determine the density of an irregular object?
Find the mass of the object using a mass balance.
Fill a eureka can with water. It should be just below the level of the spout where water can exit.
Submerge the object fully into the water, causing water to be displaced and flow out of the spout.
Measure the volume of water displaced in a measuring cylinder, this volume is equal to the volume of the object.
Divide mass by volume to calculate density.
