Required Practicals Flashcards
What are the 6 steps to find specific heat capacity of a material?
1) Turn on power supply
2) Measure temperature every minute for 10 minutes
3) Calculate power with P = VI
4) For each minute over the 10 minutes, calculate energy transferred with E = Pt
5) Plot Graph (see diagram in book)
6) Specific heat capacity formula
What is the specific heat capacity formula?
Specific heat capacity
=
1 ——————————— gradient x mass of block
How is the practical for specific heat capacity set up?
Power supply - set Potential Dif. (V)
2 wires, one plugs directly to the ammeter, the other plugs into the heater.
The heater plugs into the ammeter as well.
How is the heater set up for specific heat capacity practical?
Heater goes into small hole in a block of the material wish to be used, and so does the thermometer and insert a couple drops of oil.
Then fully insulate the material by wrapping it in cotton wool
What is specific heat capacity?
The energy required to raise 1 kilogram by 1 degree C
What are the 3 steps to find a components I-V characteristics?
1) Very variable resistor to change current through circuit, then take a reading of I and V, repeat until ammeter is maxed out.
2) Swap over wires connected to the battery to reverse current and repeat step 1
3) Plot values on I-V graph
Current - y axis
Potential difference - x axis
What is needed for an I-V practical?
A circuit containing the following.
- Battery
- Variable Resistor
- Ammeter
- Voltmeter - attached to component
- Component:
Resistor
Filament Lamp
Diode
