required practical - thermal insulators Flashcards
what does part one of the experiment test
comparing how effective different materials are as thermal insulators
what does part two of the experiment test
investigating how effective different materials thicknesses are as thermal insulators
what are the steps of section one
- place a small beaker inside a larger one. use a kettle to boil water.
- transfer 80cm cubed of boiling water into the small beaker
- use a piece of cardboard to cover the beakers insuring a hole is used for a thermometer. place this thermometer through the hole
- record the starting temperature of the water and start a stopwatch
- record the temperature every three minutes for fifteen minutes
- repeat with insulating materials inside the larger beaker
what materials can be used as thermal insulators
bubble wrap, cotton wool, polystyrene balls
what is the IV of the first experiment
insulating material
what is the DV of the first experiment
the temperature of the water
what is the control variable of the first experiment
volume of water, mass of material, starting temp of water
what are the steps of section two
set up the same but only one beaker
1.start with 80cm cubed of hot water
2. record the temperature every three minutes for fifteen minutes
3. now wrap two layers of newspaper round the beaker
4. time for fifteen minutes checking every three
5. then repeat with four layers and then six
