required practical - density Flashcards
1
Q
what is the equation for density
A
mass/volume
1
Q
how do you determine the density of a regular object
A
- use a balance to determine the mass of the object
- use a ruler to work out the volume by measuring the length of the side
- uses this figure and put into the equation for volume
- use both mass and volume to find out density
2
Q
what is the equation for volume
A
length of the side cubed
3
Q
explain the density of an irregular object
A
- measure the mass of the object using a balance
- fill a eureka can with water making sure it is filled all the way to the bottom of the opening of the spout
- place a cylinder below the spout
- attach a piece of string to the object and slowly lower it into the can ensure to only do this until the object is fully submerged
- any water that is displaced will flow into the spout and into the cylinder
- measure the volume of water displaced this is the volume of the object
- now add both figures into the equation mass/volume ensuring you convert to kg and M
