Required Practical - Making a salt from a Carbonate or a salt Flashcards
What is the point of the practical?
To find out how to make a pure, dry sample of a soluble salt from an insoluble carbonate or oxide.
What is a salt?
An ionic substance
What is soluble?
Something that dissolves in water
What is insoluble?
Something that doesn’t dissolve in water
Acid + Metal oxide?
metal salt + water
Acid + metal carbonate?
metal salt + water + carbon dioxide
Method:
- Add the metal oxide or carbonate to a warm solution of acid until no more will react.
- Filter the excess metal oxide or carbonate to leave a solution of salt.
- Gently warm the salt solution so that the water evaporates and crystals of salt are formed.
Hazards:
- corrosive acid - eye protection
- Hot equipment - Gloves and be careful
What can calcium hydroxide be used to show?
Production of CO2
Hydrochloric acid (HCL) makes -
Metal Chlorides
Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) makes -
Metal sulphates
Nitric acid (HNO3) makes -
Metal nitrates
Name 2 methods of testing PH:
- A PH probe
- Universal indicator
What does litmus paper do?
It changes colour from Red to Blue or vice versa
What does Universal indicator do?
Universal indicator is a mixture of dyes that show a range of colours to indicate how acidic or alkali a substance is.
