Required practical 3: Effect of osmosis of plant tissue Flashcards
What is Osmosis?
Osmosis is the movement of water from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration through a partially permeable membrane
What would happen if a plant cell was placed in a concentrated solution
Water would move out of the cell by osmosis causing the cell to shrink
What happens when water moves into the plant cell?
Expand
What is used to get all the cyclinders of patato the same diameter?
Cork borer
What must be meassured before putting the patato cyclinders in the test tube?
The mass
What solution is most of the patato cyclinders placed in?
sugar solution
What is used instead of tap water and why?
Distilled water because it contains no dissolved substances which could effect the rate of osmosis.
What should be done after removeing the patato cyclinders from the test tude?
Gently roll them on a paer towel and pat them dry to remove any surface moisture
What 2 features of the patato cyclinders must be meassured before the experiment?
Length of the cyclinders (ensure they are the same) and the mass
What 2 features of the patato cyclinders must be meassured after the experiment?
Length of the cyclinders and the mass
What equation is used to found out percentage change?
% change = (change in value/original value) X 100
