How do you work out the total magnification?
Multiply the objective lens magnification x eyepiece lens magnification
What part of the mircroscope is the slide placed on?
The stage
Equation for size of image?
Size of image= real size of object X magnification
What is 0.05mm in micrometres?
50μm
How many micrometres are there in 1 millimetre?
1000μm
How to prepare a a slide with plant cells on it?
-Put a small drop of water on the microscope slide
-Peel some onion skin from the inside of a leaf on an onion bulb
-Use forceps to transfer the skin to the drop of water. Make sure it is flat and there are no trapped air bubbles. Stain cells with iodine.
Why is iodine used to stain cells?
To make the internal structures more viscible. Most cells are colourless
Method for animal cells
-Put a small drop of water on the microscope slide
-Gently swob the inside of your mouth with a cotton bud
-Gently rub the cotton bud in the drop of water. You will be able to see the cells to the naked eye.
With animal cells what can be used to stain the cells?
Methylene blue
