Reptile Questions Flashcards
What is the POTZ for reptiles under anaesthesia?
Higher than 20C
Why is so important to keep reptiles within their POTZ 24/7?
To make sure they are able to metabolise drugs and fluids.
Why oxygenated and deoxygenated blood mix in reptiles?
They have 3 chambered heart with only partial separation in their ventricle.
Do reptiles take up inhalation agents as efficiently as mammals?
They don’t due to their lungs being simple sacs
How long snakes should be fasted prior to anaesthesia?
2 days, longer for larger snakes
What drugs are used as induction agents in reptiles?
Propofol and alfaxalone
What is the ventilation rate (b/p/m) in most reptiles?
4-8 b/p/m
What is the breathing stimulus in reptiles?
Low O2
What are two kind of drugs that can be used to anesthetize reptiles?
Propofol and alfaxalone
In relation to body temperature what is important to remember when a reptile is recovering from anaesthesia
Ensure that they are maintained in POTZ
Snakes have no diaphragm.
1) What anatomy do they use to breath in?
2) What anatomy do they use to breath out?
Ribs and intercostal muscles to breath in
Abdominal and intercostal muscles to breath out
Explain how a tortoise exhales
The limbs are retracted into the shell, this causes an increase in soft tissue and pressure in the coelomic cavity which then forces the air out of the lungs
