Category - Class I - minimal risk

No underlying disease
Examples -
Ovariohysterectomy, castration, hip dysplasia radiograph
Category - Class II - slight risk

Animals with slight to mild systemic disturbances.
Animals able to compensate
No clinical signs of disease
Examples - Neonate or geriatric animals, obesity, fracture without shock, mild diabetes, low-grade heart worm infestation
Category - Class III - moderate risk

Animals with severe systemic disease or disturbances, not compensating fully
Examples - Anaemia, anorexia, moderate dehydration, low grade kidney disease, low grade heart murmur or cardiac disease, moderate fever
Category - Class IV - high risk

Animals with pre-existing systemic disease or disturbances of a severe nature that are a constant threat to life
Examples - Severe dehydration, shock, anaemia, uraemia or toxaemia, high fever, uncompensated heart disease

Surgery often performed in desperation on animals with life-threatening systemic disease or disturbances not often correctable by an operation, includes all moribund animals not expected to survive 24 hrs
