Reproductive System - Hormonal Changes In Males Flashcards
Where is Testosterone Produced and where is it located?
Testosterone is produced by Interistital Cells, that are located in between semiferious tubules.
Two Main Functions of Testosterone
1.) Stimulates Spermatogenesis - spermatogenia to divide and differientate into mature sperm cells.
2.) Increases the development of secondary sex characteristics
Examples of Secondary Sex Characteristics…(4)
1.) Stimulates the maturation of testes, penis, prostate gland and seminal vesicles.
2.) Promotes growth of facial and body hair, growth of the larynx (lowering of voice), strengthening of muscles.
3.) Increases the secretion of body oils (causes acne development)
4.) Associated with male sex drive (libido)
Testosterone is used to produce…
Anabolic steroids, this can be used for hormonal issues (delayed puberty), muscle loss (cancer) or illegal use (improving performance).
Define Acrosomal Reactions
Acrosomal Reaction is when a single sperm binds, there will be a depolarization throughout the egg memberane which prevents polyspermy.
Define Cortical Reactions
Series of changes that occur to the outer layer of the egg, triggers the release of calcium, which causes swelling. Swelling is called fertilization memberane, which resists the entry of additional sperm (polyspermy)
The production of sperm and testestrone in the testis is controlled by…
Negative Feedback Loop.
