Reproductive System Flashcards
Testes
organs that produce sperm and sex hormones
scrotum
pouch of skin containing testes. It hangs outside the body to keep the sperm cooler than normal body temperature.
bladder
the organ in the body that holds urine
prostate gland
the gland surrounding the neck of the bladder that produces the liquid component of semen
penis
the male genital organ of higher vertebrates, carrying the duct for the transfer of sperm during copulation. In humans and most other mammals, it consists largely of erectile tissue and is used also for urination.
Urethra
the duct by which urine is conveyed out of the body from the bladder, and which in male vertebrates also conveys semen.
Sperm Duct
these ducts transport sperm from the epididymis to the ejaculatory ducts
Uterus
the organ in the lower body of a woman or female mammal where offspring are conceived and in which they gestate before birth; the womb.
Ovary
a female reproductive organ in which ova or eggs are produced
Vagina
the muscular tube leading from the external genitals to the cervix of the uterus
Oviduct
the tube through which an ovum or egg passes from an ovary.
Cervix
the narrow passage forming the lower end of the uterus
follicles
sacs containing egg cells
Seminal vesicle
Also contributes some of the liquid that makes up semen. The fluid produced by the seminal vesicle contains proteins, enzymes, sugar, vitamin C and other substances. The sugar provides a source of energy for sperm cells.
Fertilisation
penetration of the ovum by a sperm
