Genetics Flashcards
Genetics
the study of heredity and the variation of inherited characteristics.
Heridity
is the passing on of traits from parents to their offspring
Inheritance
a thing that is inherited.
Dominant
relating to or denoting heritable characteristics which are controlled by genes that are expressed in offspring even when inherited from only one parent.
Recessive
relating to or denoting heritable characteristics controlled by genes which are expressed in offspring only when inherited from both parents.
Allele
each of two or more alternative forms of a gene that arise by mutation and are found at the same place on a chromosome.
Mitosis
Mitosis is the process of a parent cell splitting into two daughter cells, passing on the parent cell DNA into both daughter cells.
DNA
deoxyribonucleic acid, a self-replicating material which is present in nearly all living organisms as the main constituent of chromosomes. It is the carrier of genetic information.
nucleotides
a compound consisting of a nucleoside linked to a phosphate group. Nucleotides form the basic structural unit of nucleic acids such as DNA
deoxyribose
a sugar derived from ribose by replacement of a hydroxyl group by hydrogen.
base pairing
two complementary nitrogenous molecules that are connected by hydrogen bonds.
