Reproductive System Flashcards
Two kinds of reproduction
Asexual
Sexual
The creation of new individuals
Reproduction
Making new individuals through fusion of sex cells
Sexual reproduction
Making an exact replica of adult
Genetically identical
Asexual Reproduction
Budding, Fission, and parthenogenesis are examples of:
Asexual reproduction
Define budding
When a small individual grows off adult body and buds off
Define fission
When an individual splits into two
Define parthenogenesis
When a genetically unique individual is born from an unfertilized egg
Which kind of reproduction creates a new & unique genetic combination?
Sexual reproduction
Advantages of sexual reproduction
Increases survivorship as environment changes
Allows for greater variety which can lead to evolution of the species
Disadvantages of sexual reproduction
Have to find a mate
Needs synchronized timing
Sex cells must meet
Two strategies for fertilization
- External
2. Internal
External fertilization:
Sex cells meet outside the body
Usually need water to mix
Needs a lot of sex cells since many don’t meet
Internal fertilization:
Sex cells meet inside (requires copulation)
More reliable for sex cells to meet
Not water reliant
Human female strategy of sex cells
Fewer, large sex cells with a better chance of survival for each
